Six figures appear in a formal garden landscape. On the right a pair of men in powdered wigs stand behind two women, one seated in a wheelchair, before an elaborate portico. A pair of boys, also sporting wigs, stand on the left, partly screened by a fountain. One of the boys holds a shell and the other carries a parrot. A small pool extends through the middle ground behind the figures and draws attention to the setting and the distant obelisk visible above the trees.

An ivory snuff bottle in the shape of seashell and fish. Carved on the body of the seashell are the scales and eyes of the fish. The bottom of the seashell curves and extends the up the side of the shell body in the shape of a tail. The top of the shell (where the mouth of the fish would be) is the stopper in the shape of a spiral shell. The snuff bottle is an incised wooden stand.

Two rough figures dominate the composition with a lightly etched landscape behind them. Both figures hold a staff and each is dressed in ragged clothes. In addition, the scallop shell, indicating that they are pilgrims to the shrine of St. James the Greater at Santiago de Compostela, is visible on the brims of their hats, and on the left shoulder of the man standing to the right.
